LEXAN EXELL D — Infrastructure application
01

Overview

As urban development continues to expand alongside major transportation corridors, effective noise mitigation has become an essential part of modern infrastructure design. Highway sound barriers must reduce traffic noise while maintaining visibility, allowing natural light to pass through, and preserving the visual character of surrounding communities.

For this project, transparent polycarbonate glazing was selected as part of a highway noise barrier system to help meet acoustic performance requirements while delivering long-term durability in an outdoor environment.

02

The challenge

The project required a transparent barrier material capable of supporting the overall acoustic design without compromising aesthetics or structural performance.

The selected glazing solution needed to:

  1. Contribute to effective traffic noise reduction
  2. Maintain high levels of light transmission and visibility
  3. Resist long-term outdoor weathering and UV exposure
  4. Offer excellent impact resistance for roadside applications
  5. Be lightweight to simplify transportation and installation
  6. Meet the durability requirements of permanent infrastructure

Balancing acoustic performance with transparency and long-term reliability was critical to the success of the installation.

03

The solution

LEXAN™ EXELL D Polycarbonate Sheet was chosen for the transparent sections of the sound barrier system because of its combination of optical clarity, impact resistance, and weatherability.

Its lightweight construction simplified installation while providing a durable glazing solution capable of withstanding demanding outdoor conditions. The material also helped maintain an open visual environment by allowing natural light to pass through the barrier.

04

Why LEXAN™ EXELL D

  • Excellent optical clarity for transparent noise barrier systems
  • High impact resistance for public infrastructure
  • UV-protected surface for long-term outdoor weatherability
  • Lightweight construction that reduces handling and installation effort
  • Good structural performance for exterior glazing applications
  • Available in clear and selected coloured options to suit project requirements
  • Suitable for highway noise barriers, rail infrastructure, and urban sound mitigation projects
05

Results

The completed sound barrier system successfully combined acoustic performance with transparency, helping reduce the impact of highway noise while maintaining an open, visually appealing streetscape. The use of lightweight polycarbonate glazing also contributed to efficient installation and long-term outdoor performance.
